Nursery Rhymes
Has anyone ever noticed that most nursery rhymes are sad? Let's take a look at three of them:
#1
Jack and Jill GOOD
Went up the hill GOOD
To fetch a pail of water GOOD
Jack fell down BAD
And broke his crown BAD
And Jill came tumblin' after. BAD
Poor Jack, he goes up to get some water with his sister, and he falls down the hill. Just a bit tragic, don't you think?
#2
I'm a little teapot GOOD
Short and stout GOOD
Here is my handle GOOD
Here is my spout GOOD
When I get all steamed up BAD
Hear me shout BAD
"Tip me over and BAD
Pour me out!" BAD
Obviously, this teapot has a very bad temper, even if it is because the tea is done.
#3
The itsy bitsy spider GOOD
Went up the water spout. GOOD
Down came the rain BAD
And washed the spider out. BAD
Out came the sun GOOD
And dried up all the rain, GOOD
And the itsy bitsy spider GOOD
Climbed up the spout again. GOOD
This spider keeps climbing up the gutter spout, only to be washed away each time it tries. I wonder what is so important at the top of the gutter?
See what I mean? All of these are sad stories. I have no idea why people teach these rhymes to toddlers, because if you think about it, they are absolutely heartbreaking.
